I came across it by chance during a visit to a resale shop in the Paris region. This watch model immediately attracted me even though I am not used to wearing this style of watch, nor its diameter. Indeed, this one is 38mm while I only regularly wear 42/44 mm. 
I also discovered the moon phase complication, and I am very happy to have one today in my collection. 
This watch attracts attention and many people make complimentary remarks to me. Indeed, its art deco / vintage style does not go unnoticed. 
With this purchase, my tastes have evolved because I am increasingly moving towards 34/38mm models, in vintage style.

I sold a Hublot Classic Fusion to acquire an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch. I was looking for a new, collectible watch and above all an iconic watch, with a story behind it. I turned to the Moonwatch. I chose it in sapphire crystal so that I could admire its incredible mechanical movement.

My Seed (lunar)

For my 50th birthday, I wanted a special watch so I decided to go with an Omega Moonwatch. The recently discontinued model (caliber 1861) was in production for over 20+ years so a large number of them is out there.  The most recent iteration (caliber 3861), with its new bracelet, became too dressy for my liking and lost its tool watch looks.  It’s like comparing a Rolex on Oyster vs Jubilee….  The Omega “Tintin” was produced for only 2 years so it’s empirically rare.  I like the “If you know, you know” factor! 

To the Moon and back

I was looking for THE watch, the one I would wear every day, robust, reliable, elegant, historic, waterproof, prestigious, the watch of my dreams. For me it ticks all the boxes.

This iteration of the Speed, the 3861 combines modernity and the excellence of a cutting-edge movement, with classic and timeless charm, especially with the hesalite glass. I chose this model because I am a carpenter, I only wear it every day, I swim with it in summer, I bathe my daughters with it, it lives with me. The steel back with the Omega seahorse looks more like a toolwatch I think, with the all-brushed bracelet. And the hesalite brings so much depth to the dial, the play of light, the distortion, the dome, with this step dial and the sub-dials that add so much relief. A little polywatch once a year, and off we go again! I am therefore less afraid of scratching the hesalite than a sapphire! I find that it gives it a real extra soul. This is the only watch that offers that in the current landscape. And we are talking about a hand-wound chronograph, which for me is already part of an approach with an emotional connection to this watch.

I find the new chronograph hand thinner, more elegant, the railway more airy and precise in relation to the frequency of the movement, the balance of the baton indexes and the readability are incredible.

I don't have a big wrist, but the 42 mm don't feel it at all. It is the size of a 40 mm, that's the genius of Omega, with these Lyre lugs, the refined bracelet, the reduced lug-to-lug distance...

The 3861 is very precise, it only advances 0.2s per day. Anti-magnetic, waterproof, the METAS certification reassures me, and the co-axial movement is exceptional. 

Its history is obviously incredible, but it is not only about the conquest of space. It has also experienced polar and Antarctic expeditions, and that is what I like. 

To conclude, this speed is for me the ultimate watch, the watch of a lifetime. It is a dreamer's watch.

A legendary watch, my watch

Is it still necessary to add an additional opinion on the Speedmaster? I'll risk it anyway. A watch is a story, a movement, and a design. And there, nothing to complain about, the three elements are combined. Yes, Omega plays the marketing of the "first watch on the Moon" to the fullest. But it still works, right? Then there is this design, what readability, what balance. I don't know why some aficionados go crazy with this DON (dot over 90) but it is there. And finally, this co-axial caliber is still exceptional. I like the rustic side of the manual winding. It allows you to have a more intimate connection with your watch (well, you get what I mean).
And what I also like about my Speed is that you can wear it with a suit as well as on a golf course or in the evening. And when you want to change your look, everything suits it: NATO in all colors, black or brown leather.

Indispensable

Typically the watch I had always heard about without ever considering it. Rather interested in divers and 3 hands, I had never been tempted by chronos. And then a meeting with an enthusiast and a visit to a watchmaker to try one did the rest. Some research on a 311, or a really vintage 145 before, but without finding anything exceptional in terms of condition. Finally, a video by Xavier on Dialicious to react to the launch of the new 310 co-axial made up my mind. Once on my wrist, the charm worked. Timeless and captivating vintage comfort and elegance. I like everything about this watch, the proportions are divine, the readability is maximum. This matte powder black dial which contrasts with these white indexes and hands, this Omega logo painted on this Hesalite version. The lyre horns, the “dot over ninety”, the step dial… Supreme and old-fashioned luxury, the manual winding… Conquered!

Space conquest on the wrist

(Speedmaster Moonwatch Co-Axial/ Hesalite/ solid case back/ steel bracelet /Reference: 310.30.42.50.01.001) After having dreamed of this legendary model on the Internet for a long time, I was able to try it out in store at the beginning of 2022. It was love at first sight as soon as I put it on my wrist! Its acquisition became an obsession and I took the plunge in June 2022 through an online professional. I chose the Hesalite model to get a little closer to the historic model (I recommend installing an invisible protective shell on the glass to avoid scratches as I did). The proportions of this chronograph are simply perfect and the timeless design means that you can't get tired of it. The fully brushed steel bracelet is exceptionally comfortable. The clasp is also beautiful but quite fragile to scratches (I put an invisible tape to keep its original freshness...). The readability is perfect and what a pleasure to admire the Omega logo floating above the dial. What pride to have the famous co-axial movement and to wear such an emblematic watch. Every time I put it on my wrist, I feel the same happiness! I read a lot of testimonials from watch enthusiasts who talk about this watch as a Grail that many dream of acquiring one day... Thanks to my experience, I can reassure them and tell them that they are right to want this piece because it is simply exceptional!

A sporty, timeless watch with a strong history! Easy to wear, you can vary the bracelets for more chic or simply to echo why it was designed. Motor racing! Despite a diameter of 42mm, these lugs that are refined perfectly fit the finest handles.

What can I say about the Speedmaster... a perfect balance between sportiness, utility, elegance. What strikes me most about the Speed is its visibility, you can't do simpler and more efficient, probably one of the points that seduced NASA. And then it's a piece of history, you imagine yourself being a hero of the conquest of space with a Speed on your wrist. It is light and easy to wear, it's a chameleon, it can do everything and it does everything well! you will have understood I am in love with my Speed. come on one flaw, the handling of the crown is not super easy, you catch it "with difficulty", but each time I wind it I imagine that this task must have been part of the checklist of the Apollo missions and it makes me smile!

If there was only one left...

An incredible watch, my favorite. It accompanies you in all circumstances, the most casual as well as the most formal. Steel, leather, NATO, black, brown or more colorful, everything suits it. It is the watch of a lifetime. And what a story. For this reason, many, like me, like it in hesalite and solid caseback but more modern variations may be of interest. The only downside is that it drowns when you see a glass of water, no matter, I will settle for an old rum.

She can do everything

By dint of hearing about and seeing the Speedmaster on forums/internet and especially on the Dialicious channel, I became more interested in this watch. What a mistake... for my wallet! 
I was looking for a chronograph with an apparent movement and a certain notoriety. The Daytona being inaccessible (for a decent price) my choice was going to fall on the Zenith Chronomaster Sport. And then I went to the store to try this Speed Sapphire... 
What a joy on the wrist! The new bracelet is simply incredibly comfortable, the buckle is neat and benefits from a micro-adjustment since 2023. 
The sapphire version inherits "mirror polished" central links and an applied logo: shiny but not too much. In any case for me, it is a subtle blend of modernity and history! And then what a joy to see this mechanical movement in action... 
Ideal size, neither too big nor too thick. A real treat to wear. 
As for the performance, the watch is truly "Metas". 
The only downside? The water resistance is only 50m. It might be time to put 100m, in order to be able to take the beauty out on a rainy day... 
As for the price, it's not a real debate for me, given the madness of the market... especially when the criticism comes from potential buyers of second-hand chronographs at more than €25k from a certain brand with the crown... :) 
In short, under the absolute charm, the "love story" is in full swing... Until the Chronosport arrives...😬

Between history and modernity

Wearing this watch is like being teleported back 60 years and reliving the great era of humanity's greatest adventure, the conquest of space. 
Relive the Mercury, Gemini and of course Apollo missions. Wearing it is like imagining yourself in Michael Collins' shoes when he was waiting for Armstrong and Aldrin to return in the Apollo 11 lunar service module. Live differently, higher, further.

Participate in the conquest of space.

It is sometimes difficult to explain certain emotions and feelings, and that is a bit what happened with the Speed for me. I have been looking at this watch for years, since I started to really be a watch fanatic and had a certain budget to treat myself. Because that is how I am, I am not interested in things that are unattainable for me.

The Speed is an icon of watchmaking, a piece to have in your collection, and therefore one that piqued my interest. However, every time I tried it on I did not find it to my taste: the shape of the lugs in the extension of the caseband which gives an oval shape rather than a round one, the sub-counters too close to the center of the dial which make it squint, the shoulders between the pushers and the crown which are unsightly seen from the back, and the twisted lugs seen from the side are all details that I did not particularly like. And on the old model, well not a fan of the bracelet in addition that I found too massive! In short, still quite a few points that I did not like…

And yet, the Speed has always been part of my reflections, not regularly but at least each time I drew up my short list before any new purchase. Cycle after cycle, I reread the same articles, watched the same videos and of course put it on my wrist, but without ever taking the plunge.

A few months ago, I was again in a "Speedistic" spiral. I had just acquired a Cartier Santos, so I was not at all in a purchasing process. And then finally, it was just another cycle, identical to all the others before, at the end of which I would still not be convinced anyway, as usual.

But hey I was going to my favorite AD for my wife, so I had to find something to try to keep me busy! So that day, I spent the afternoon with the Speed on my wrist taking pictures. By the end of the day, my wife had concluded her deal and we were ready to go home. My AD then took his calculator, a sheet of paper and a pen and started scribbling numbers for a while. After a few minutes, he said to me: if you are interested in the Speed, I have a good offer to make you, take the time to think about it and tell me again. The bastard, he had planted his little seed, and it germinated throughout the following month. For the reasons previously mentioned, this story gnawed at my brain. After a month and a half, weakened by my cognitive battles, I finally cowardly gave in... I would die sooner or later, so it might as well be now! I chose the classic Moonwatch Professional, black dial, sapphire glass and back, reference 310.30.42.50.01.002. I have been wearing it for several months now and the flaws I found have disappeared. I have even learned to love them because in the end they are the identity of the watch. What is certain is that I appreciate the Speed more and more. It happens to me often, my favorites do not always last but some things take me time to appreciate them and even end up being indispensable to me.

This watch has become a real life companion for me. It is very well finished, with its subtle polished details that bring shine but skillfully positioned which means that they are not too prone to scratches. Over time, I must admit that I have become a fan of its "oval" shape but still not too much of its twisted horns, finally seen from the side, because seen from the front they really refine the case with an incredible optical effect. But where I am captivated is when I look at it in profile with the inverted bevel of the bezel and the domed glass, I loooooooooove it! It is a chronograph so theoretically loaded, but this is absolutely not felt and does not penalize at all the readability which is really great! I just regret that the pretty Omega logo applied (on my sapphire version) is hidden by the drop of water of the chronograph hand. I also really like its slightly grainy dial and its different reliefs with the sub-dials and the railroad slightly recessed. I find that the design of the new 2021 bracelet is really great, between the jubilee and the roller, very comfortable with its short links. With its progressive refinement and its very high-quality machined buckle, I prefer it 100 times to the old version. In addition, the small adjustment of the buckle is always welcome in the summer. I just find that it has a lot of stretch but frankly it is not felt when worn.

Some will say that increasing prices by 50% in 5 years is unacceptable, that this watch has been seen and reviewed, that its power reserve is well below current standards, etc. etc. There is not only falsehood in this, but everyone sees noon at their door, but I am happy every time it is on my wrist. I knew that one day I would have a Speed, it is now the case and frankly I am in heaven. It is a watch that does everything well, without ostentation and without pretension, but with accuracy and efficiency. Finally, it is the one in my collection that I took the longest to love but which will certainly end up being one of those that I wear the most.

I'll have it one day, I'll have it!

A brand that made me dream, a legendary model because of its history, a classic, refined and efficient chronograph. That's why I dreamed of it. The reference 3570 bought second-hand a few years ago. Solid caseback, hesalite glass for its incredible reflections. The plus, all the bracelets suit it perfectly. A pleasure to wear for so many years.

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch 

When I bought (second-hand) this omega ref 3590.50.00 tritium from 1996, the price was still reasonable compared to a sub from the same period. The patina of the tritium indexes is superb with its eggshell color. The watch is versatile and can be dressed with multiple bracelets that make it either dressy or sporty. The original bracelet is also beautifully made even if the clasp is a bit archaic today. Despite an announced diameter of 42mm, the moonwatch is perfect for a small wrist and very comfortable.

an iconic watch at an (almost) reasonable price

Exceptional jewel in all its details (visible in the stand up) the perfect alliance of modern and vintage for me who is starting my watchmaking journey. We never tire of contemplating it because it has so many facets and details. I wear it in all circumstances. From jogging to tuxedo.

It's been over a year now that I have the Omega Speedmaster in my collection. I got this watch for a very specific purpose: to have the watch of my dreams! A slap of emotions

Having owned a 2002 model that had signed my entry into the "superior" watch category, I resold this model by mistake and I bit my fingers for years. I learned of the release of a Sapphire model with applied logo, I could not pass it up, so I bought this model and I do not regret it, I find what made me love this model, with additional improvements, the coaxial movement, the Sapphire (sandwich) glasses and this look worthy of traveling to Mars, even if it has already been to the Moon (?). It is an iconic timepiece but not only that it is as sporty as it is dress Watch. a must have to wear in all circumstances?

The moon is not that far away

Quite a novice in watchmaking, I wanted to treat myself to a watch to mark a special occasion. I immersed myself for a long time in fascinating videos on the history of this watch, especially those on Xavier's channel. Yes, marketing got me. No, I don't regret anything. And again yes, I still love this watch as much. Initially far from being attracted to the black color, I instantly fell in love with this watch during my various fittings. Incredible readability, a feeling of contained size, despite its 42mm, the applique logo, this magnificent movement exposed behind the transparent back... The charm really worked only when I put it on my wrist. Not a fan of metal bracelets, I regularly have fun combining it with nato straps, and recently, a brown leather one, with the impression that everything suits it. In short, a watch that I wear regularly, without getting tired of it.

A classic, but so chameleon-like

In 2015, I had a big fall that immobilized me for six months and required five operations, leading to a major repair of my Navitimer Cosmonaute. It was a sign to retire it and repair a youthful mistake: having ignored the MoonWatch for so long, even though I have been passionate about astronautics since my adolescence. I experienced the Conquest of Space, all the great premieres without exception, without having this legendary chronograph on my wrist. Thanks to the FAM forum, I acquired a 2002 model, very classic (solid caseback and hesalite). And since then, it has been bliss. It is more discreet than my Navitimer, ultra-precise and exceptionally readable. I wear it almost constantly, alternating slightly with my other watches. I do not spare it any more than my Breitling: DIY, cutting, hiking without taking any special precautions (except water of course). If a watch that has passed all NASA tests cannot withstand the vibrations of brush cutters and other large tools, what is the point of acquiring one? For me, owning this chronograph (which has become a luxury item when it was not originally the case) is a way of trying to get a little closer to the level of those who wore it. I defend this idea: living with perfection (at least technical) should make us (a little) better in our lives.

How can you not love him?

This is surely the most thoughtful choice I have had to make when buying a watch. Without being particularly passionate about chronographs, I was looking for a historical model that had been released without interruption since its creation - 1957 in the case of the first Speedmaster -

It is a search in history, mine and that of a watch that has evolved over time like me. This adventure led me to turn to Omega - undoubtedly one of my favorite brands - because it has offered hundreds of models - many have disappeared - while developing some of their models that have become historic, such as the Speed or the Seamaster! It is a simple, efficient and recognizable chronograph, of course, but which knows how to remain discreet. This Speed - reference 145022 - bears the marks of time like all vintage watches of this era and suits me well.

I had a blast understanding the differences between the Speed models and identifying and validating that this one had all the characteristics of a model manufactured in 1970. A loop is closed, an adventure has ended, until the next one...

A 50 year old vintage for my 50th birthday

2018.. I've been carrying an Apple Watch around on my wrist for several months now but I feel like something is wrong, I feel a bit ridiculous and like a toy. I know absolutely nothing about watchmaking but it's with this simple question "what does a "real" watch look like other than the Apple Watch?" that I type "watch" into the YouTube search bar. 

After a few videos I know a bit more, I understand the craftsmanship, the engineering, etc... but one thing is for sure: this Omega that everyone is talking about is incredibly ugly and I will never have a watch like this that I found complex and vulgar. 

The next day I decided to find out more about these stories of beautiful watches, so I pushed open the door of Omega "hello m, I don't know anything about watches, my grandmother always had Omegas so you're the only ones I know" .. we spoke to the seller for a few minutes and I told him clearly that I found the speedmaster horrible and that I didn't understand its success at all. He offered to let me see it to give me a more "real" opinion and brought out this professional moonwatch on its leather strap. 

Those who have seen Harry Potter 1 will understand (the scene where the wand chooses its wizard). There was an instant click in me: I had never held a more beautiful object in my hands in my life. The absolute shock between the quality of manufacture, the overall harmony of this entire front face, the chrono movement without an oscillating weight at the back, the leather strap that goes perfectly with the watch. 

It was over. I instantly bought the watch (and had a final surprise with the simply enormous packaging) and it has not left me since. 

The speedmaster moonwatch on crocodile strap is the ultimate watch. Of course it cannot be worn on all occasions, forget sports, summer and its sweat (I bought it a magnificent Omega nylon strap for that) and the slightest drop of rain! 

The watch is not particularly practical since it must be wound manually every day and does not have a very good power reserve, not particularly precise without its stop second, not particularly robust (in just a few months I had to change the bezel for a shock that had completely deformed it) and not particularly reliable (I quickly had a problem with the chronograph whose hours were not precise) but this watch is nevertheless PERFECT 

It falls on the wrist as if it were part of you and each glance at it plunges you into a hypnosis and happiness that I have never found since.

Quite a story..

Not much to say really. This watch ticks all the boxes and it would certainly be the one I would keep if there was only one left. It can be worn in all contexts depending on its strap, which I particularly appreciate. Historic, comfortable, sporty but classic, in short: legendary. The chronograph that every collector must have. Nothing more to add dear aficionados!

Mandatory in a collection

After being immersed during my adolescence in science fiction, space, the moon and aerospace in general have become an escape from everyday life for me. Age advances and new passions appear. And here I come across this marvel. The watch that has been to the moon! My blood only made one turn. After having put this beauty on the wrist, it is impossible not to fall for its charm, versatile, leather, nato and even its steel bracelet, everything suits it, a real barbie. One look at it and you go straight to the moon, big crush for the warmth of its hesalite glass, a must have!

Space on the wrist

Although I didn't dream of a Speed at the time of purchase, this choice was obvious when I tried it on. It's hard to express my feelings in words, you have to try it to understand. My Speedmaster moonwatch (2014 version with sapphire crystal) is a successful example of watch design. The construction of the case makes it very comfortable on the wrist despite its large dimensions on paper. The readability of the dial with its strong contrast of white indices on a matte black background makes it an excellent everyday companion. I have no problem reading the time in all circumstances. The sapphire version gives it a more "technical", more clinical look than the warmer version with hesalite crystal. It's perfect for everyday use without worrying about scratches. Sold on a steel bracelet, it goes perfectly with a wide range of leather or textile bracelets, which ultimately makes it very suitable in all situations. I am never disappointed to have chosen it in the morning for my work day or an adventure off the beaten track. The myth of lunar exploration obviously adds to my imagination to make me dream when I contemplate it during the day. The sapphire crystal on the back of my version allows to contemplate a movement that has noble origins and which by its construction allows a very visual explanation of the chronograph complication, a complication that is ultimately difficult to execute correctly and which has fascinated generations of watchmaking enthusiasts for more than half a century now. In short, a timeless, reliable and pure watch. We are not far from the ideal watch!

A clinical Moonwatch

Hello, I present to you my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch reference 145.022 transition dating from 1968. It took me quite a while to understand this transition story that I will try to explain in this post

This watch has a characteristic of the previous reference (145.012) namely the applied Omega logo which will disappear in favor of a logo painted in white. However the base of the chronograph hand is flat while on the 145.012, it has the shape of a drop of water!

How do you know if it is a 145.012 or a 145.022 transition? Quite simply - with the help of a watchmaker - to open the case to identify the caliber... In this case, it is the 861 which succeeded the 321 present in all the historical references since the launch of the Speed in 1957 with the reference CK 2915 from memory.

But then, why a transitional model? This is where we have to go back to a time without computers with paper records where stocks were not managed and automated as they are today. Omega had decided to develop its model with a more advanced caliber (321 to 861)... The story goes that they had dials left with the applied logo and that these were integrated into the first reference 145.022. The following ones had the dial with the applied logo! This makes this watch a rarer, more original model that allows you to dive into the magical world of vintage... Each vintage watch has its little secrets that enthusiasts unearth through hard work.

I must pay tribute to the authors of the book Moonwatch Only who opened my eyes to all the subtleties of the Speed adding to the myth of the conquest of the Moon, an industrial dimension that is at least interesting...

This watch symbolizes above all what interests me in vintage... Surprise, uncertainty, doubt and the quest for a grail that continues to evolve as we have the feeling of getting closer to it....

145.022 transitional

You know this watch. It is one of the most iconic watch designs of all time. It has reached cult status with its association with space exploration. It seems to be the basis of every single great watch collection, especially before the recent price hikes. And yet, none of these are the reason why I own and why I will never get rid of my Omega Speedmaster.

Every watch carries a story and this one carries the most important one for me. Way back when I was still in grade school, I remember my father wearing a silver and gold colored Seiko chronograph with a white dial. I distinctly remember being fascinated with the chronograph function and the movement of the hands when you reset it. This is probably the watch that started my love for watches. As the years went on, my father got more watches and I joined him on this journey. A Swatch here, a Citizen there, I started building my own collection. But then for my 18th birthday my dad surprised me with the best gift of all time - an Omega Speedmaster, just like the one he wore every day for years. 

Like I said, you know the watch. It's not the best watch ever made. It can be a bit fragile, and the lack of water resistance prevents it from being a true GADA watch. But it doesn't have to be the best watch for everything. As long as it's the best watch for me. The 42mm wide case fits perfectly on my wrist, the build quality is fantastic, the black dial and black bezel insert just look mean as hell and the bracelet is supremely comfortable. The hesalite crystal is just perfect. I adore that it's manually wound, as it's a perfect daily ritual to wind it up every morning. 

Our love for watches is often completely irrational. As in, there are much better and much more versatile watches than the Omega Speedmaster. But this Omega is the last one I would ever get rid of. It lived with me in New York, in Amsterdam, it went through numerous jobs, it was there when I started my first and second businesses, I wore it when I got married and when my daughter was born. And, of course, it was an incredible present from my father. No wonder it's my favorite watch in the world.
