The Seiko 5 Sports is an iconic collection of automatic watches that has captured the hearts of watch lovers for over five decades. Combining reliability, durability and sporty design, this range offers excellent value for money, true to Seiko's commitment to innovation and accessibility.

Origins and History

Originally launched in the 1960s, the Seiko 5 series takes its name from five fundamental characteristics that each model had to possess:

Automatic movement : a mechanical caliber that winds thanks to the movements of the wrist.
Day and date display : presented jointly in a one-stop shop.Waterproofing : ensuring water resistance suitable for daily activities.
Recessed crown at 4 o'clock : offering increased protection and a distinctive design.
Durable case and strap : designed to withstand the rigors of daily use.

These specifications were established to provide consumers with a reliable, functional and affordable watch. Over the decades, the Seiko 5 has evolved, incorporating modern designs and technologies while retaining the fundamental principles that made it successful.

Design and Technical Characteristics

The Seiko 5 Sports collection is distinguished by a sporty and versatile aesthetic, suitable for various occasions. Models typically feature a stainless steel case measuring 42.5mm in diameter and 13.4mm thick, providing noticeable presence on the wrist without being excessive. The unidirectional bezel, often colored, adds a dynamic touch and allows time intervals to be measured, a feature appreciated by divers and athletes.

The dial, protected by scratch-resistant Hardlex glass, is available in several colors, from classic black to vibrant blue. The indexes and hands are coated with LumiBrite, Seiko's own luminescent, guaranteeing optimal readability even in low light conditions. The day/date window is positioned at 3 o'clock, providing practical functionality for everyday use.

Under the dial, the Seiko 5 Sports is powered by the caliber 4R36, a robust and reliable automatic movement. This caliber offers a power reserve of approximately 41 hours and has the manual winding function as well as the stop-seconds, allowing precise synchronization. The transparent case back allows you to admire the movement in action, adding an appreciable dimension for watch enthusiasts.

Straps vary by model, from stainless steel to nylon NATO to silicone, offering versatility in terms of style and comfort. Water resistance is typically 100 meters, making the watch suitable for swimming and light water activities, although not recommended for professional scuba diving.

Variants and Collections

The Seiko 5 Sports range is rich in variants, each bringing a unique touch while retaining the DNA of the collection. Notable sub-collections include:

ma Seiko 5 sport FIFTY FIVE FATHOMS

4.3

I present to you my Seiko 5 sport FIFTY FIVE FATHOMS...which I find goes everywhere with the look of a diver, the robustness of a sportswoman, the Seiko SNZH55K1 also known by its nickname of "Fifty Five Fathoms" for the homage to the Blancpain timepiece, is a versatile piece that can be worn on multiple occasions...Belonging to the "Best Sellers" category of the "Five" subsidiary of Seiko, the SNZH55K1 has a unidirectional bezel matching the Black & White dial of the watch. As for the hands and indexes, they are treated with Lumibrite, a non-radioactive and luminescent component, making the time readable in all circumstances. On the back, there is a transparent caseback, allowing the wearer of the timepiece to observe the caliber 7S36B in action. The Seiko manufacture movement is equipped with 23 jewels, benefiting from 40 hours of power reserve. At three o'clock, there is a date and day complication, adjustable via the crown also located at three o'clock. The whole thing is protected by a "Hardlex" tempered mineral glass, a specialty at Seiko. Finally, this automatic model is water-resistant to 100 meters. It does not allow swimming or diving, but is resistant to showers, baths, swimming or even hand washing. This watch is now impossible to find new, perhaps still on a Japanese online site where there are still new SKXs at 3 or 4 times the price ... this watch has a diameter of 42mm. price at the time: 250 euros.
