A year with Tudor: from the Black Bay Heritage to the Pelagos FXD GMT "Zulu Time"

A year ago, I purchased my first Tudor Black Bay Heritage, a watch that marked my debut in the brand's fascinating world. Today, I am renewing my commitment to Tudor by adopting the new Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT "Zulu Time", the result of a prestigious collaboration with the French Navy. From the moment it was launched, it caught my attention: its khaki strap adorned with the navy's coat of arms, its matte black dial enhanced with a touch of orange on the "Pelagos GMT" inscription, its luminescent crown and indexes... And, of course, its new GMT movement. This watch seemed to have everything it needed to seduce me.

A first impression: surprising lightness

As soon as I put it on my wrist, one detail immediately struck me: its lightness. This was my first time trying on a watch made entirely of titanium, and the combination with a NATO strap only accentuated this airy feeling. The Pelagos FXD is so light that you almost forget you’re wearing it, a feature that I found particularly pleasant.

The strap: a dark spot in a bright picture

Unfortunately, the NATO strap, although iconic, disappointed me somewhat. At this price point, I expected a strap of superior quality. This one, although aesthetically successful, is much too thin for my taste, to the point of making the passage through the buckle delicate. This detail, which could have been easily improved, slightly tarnishes the overall experience. A slightly thicker material would certainly have provided more comfort and robustness.

A timepiece that lives up to expectations

Aside from this downside, the Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT “Zulu Time” remains a remarkable watch. It has everything it takes to become one of those pieces that continue to surprise and amaze every time you wear them. Its bold design, military DNA and high-performance movement make it a perfect ally for fans of sports and technical watches.

Pelagos FXD GMT "Zulu Time"

I recently acquired for my 18th birthday this magnificent Tudor Black Bay 41 equipped with this new 5-link bracelet with this incredible folding clasp. Honestly, I can only tell you between this ceramic bezel of such a captivating red, the black dial so plunging, its gold-colored hands and the indexes that make you think of a diver, without forgetting the manufacture movement and this oval "5-link" bracelet which is so comfortable. It is for the assembly that I needed to mark her 18th birthday as she marked this year 2023.

After discovering watchmaking and buying my first mechanical watch which is also a Seiko, I decided to get this Seiko turtle model with this textured white dial but adding a personal touch to make it even more to my taste. Indeed, I wanted to change the hands of the watch to put in place these magnificent Tudor snowflake style hands.

A watch that therefore becomes two-tone black and white simple and pleasant to wear thanks to the black rubber strap that I also added. It is a watch that for me is also important since it is also with it that I discovered the functioning of a movement since I had to disassemble and reassemble the watch to put the hands (rather technical steps).

This Seiko is strange!

What can I say about this watch whose diameter is the largest in my collection: 45mm? Well Seiko are magicians. They managed to make me wear a "big" watch even though I have a chicken wrist! It really sits perfectly on my wrist. In terms of precision, I have it and wear it almost every day - it moves forward 5 seconds / day which is very very good!! On the other hand, the quality of the steel seems very low because I bumped into a door and a big scratch on one of the horns appeared. With a little elbow grease and sandpaper (grain 240 then 1000 then 3000) I managed to erase this ugly mark made at work and which would not have reminded me of a good memory. I am very satisfied with this watch with its vintage look, I quickly got the black strap because it was too big and I ordered the Seiko strap from the SRPE99k1 which suits it very well. The bezel turns perfectly but does not seem as qualitative as some other watches that I have been able to test but better than the SKX
The lume is also a great strength of Seiko and this is confirmed with this watch on which I have no trouble reading the time in the morning in the dark.


A Ninja Turtle

For the special "save the Ocean" series, Seiko released several limited edition models. My choice fell on the turtle SPB333. I love its textured dial that is reminiscent of a polar glacier. The blued steel seconds hand reinforces the icy atmosphere, as do the snow-white indexes. Polar atmosphere therefore. Beautiful symmetry of the indexes thanks to the small date window well integrated at 4:30. The bezel is textured (concentric effect). It comes with 2 beautiful bracelets, the first in steel and the second in polyester made from recycled plastic bottles. But for my part I mounted it on a rubber strap for even more comfort. As for the movement, nothing to say, the 6R35 is reliable and relatively precise. The slightly domed sapphire gives a very nice distortion when you tilt the watch. I think this Seiko will become a collector's item. Despite an announced diameter of 42mm, it is super easy to wear even for a small wrist.

Looking for a watch for my 25th birthday, I crossed the threshold of the Seiko boutique in Paris to try on watches. Being very attracted by the shape of the Seiko Turtle case, I tried on several versions: I had a real crush when I put this model on my wrist, which contains all the characteristics of a great Seiko model. The textured gray dial, its "patina" indexes and its green woven strap completely blew me away. From a technical point of view, it is also very reliable and accompanied me during a scuba dive: the readability of the indexes and the clicking of the bezel are excellent. The only flaw: the precision of the movement, which is not always top-notch. I really enjoy wearing it!

Seiko Turtle : la plus Seiko des Seiko

I was looking for a fairly robust, waterproof to 200m minimum, stylish and with a budget of less than 900 euros. I went to my favorite watch jeweler (Mr. Medard in Versailles) who then introduced me to this incredible and fairly exclusive model because it is an edition intended for the US market only. The dial reproduces the scales of a sea turtle. The variations in color and texture of the dial are captivating. The only small downside is the not great precision of the movement (30 seconds per day is starting to be a lot) .. despite its diameter of 45 mm it is easy to wear and is very comfortable.

I present to you my Seiko Turtle PADI Air Diver's 200m Special Edition, whose bezel I changed to put a black ceramic insert graduated at 12 o'clock, with luminescent numerals. Diving watch, meeting the ISO 6425 standard, designed in partnership with PADI, makes it a real toolwatch

A "diver" fashioned in the mountains

A long-time fan of Apocalypse Now, then of watchmaking... and curious about the Seiko universe, I said to myself here is a watch model that I would like! Time passes, other watches, then one day on Pascal Karp's website: a Willard, in excellent condition (not looking chewed by a pit bull, as often), from my year of birth (1976) sold at a very reasonable price by a professional that I appreciate and in whom I have complete confidence: BINGO! Delivered in a few days, love at first sight confirmed! I order from Uncle Seiko in the USA the appropriate bracelet (reissue that goes well, the originals are expensive and unreliable...). I wear it occasionally, I want to keep it as is and I consider its mechanism quite fragile (extraction of the crown, precision far from COSC standards), but what emotion on the wrist!!!

Pure Seiko, with qualities and defects characteristic of the brand.
The points that make you wince? The hardlex glass when you would like a sapphire, the movement of a very relative precision, the bracelet that gently smells of junk, without forgetting the misaligned bezel…
But hey, all this must be put into perspective with the advantages offered for the price, in particular incredible comfort for a watch of this size, it is also there that the bracelet takes its revenge by perfectly hugging the wrist, smoothly. The reduced lug-to-lug distance and the cushion case make it my most pleasant big watch to wear, only the significant weight is a handicap in this respect. The movement also has its say, not very refined but inspiring total confidence, a good tractor as they say. The sparkling luminescence is also there, as on any good Diver's of the brand.
In the end, one of my favorite watches… while I did not like the model too much before! The softness of the colours of this limited edition “Blue Lagoon” won me over, the intrinsic qualities of the watch finished convincing me.

Blue Lagoon

This is an endearing watch with a case that has a great design for a smart budget as Seiko knows so well how to do. I also have a classic Turtle and if the Turtle was the replacement for the SKX007 when it was released in 2016, the mini Turtle is a bit like the reinvented SKX013. The dial is reminiscent of previous Seiko divers, but is atypical with its elongated indices and the wave pattern a bit like the Bond Seamaster. The cyclops is forgotten. The case is the most interesting part of this watch. The bezel is sunk into the case on the sides with the edges in two parts, the brushed top and the polished bottom which visually reduces the size of the watch. Because yes, it is a 42mm but also 43mm of lugtolug, it is almost square in the end. And will fit perfectly on a chicken wrist! I find it almost too small for me at 16.5cm on the wrist where it moves a lot on the wrist with its slightly pebble-shaped format, compact, but high. However, with a thick bracelet, OEM rubber or a strapcode it still fits very well. I would have liked the crown to be more recessed into the case, because it tends to bother my wrist or by placing it at 4 o'clock like the turtle which remains my favorite despite its 45mm width. It remains a great watch, perfect for enjoying the beach and summer without stress.

Paddy SRPC41. La Mini Turtle.

I have been looking for a Seiko Turtle to my taste for a long time and I finally found this model with a magnificent dial. I like its legendary case and its beautiful presence on the wrist. I would have preferred a more qualitative movement than the 4R36 but for once, it is surprisingly precise. Maybe because it is made in Japan? In any case, it is superb. I love it.
