Prodigious Moon Phase

No matter what opinion one has of this piece, one thing is for sure, it does not leave one indifferent! It is a limited edition with ecru-colored indices and an embossed dial (PAM00569).
I am charmed by its very unique design, which would not be inappropriate in a Jules Verne novel. It is an almost anachronistic watch, with a very strong visual identity that immediately plunges us into a dreamlike science fiction universe. For these reasons I am still biased towards this watch which is not lacking in technical assets either: 72 hours of power reserve, a titanium case and able to survive 300m of depth, it is a real tool watch! Its size remains its main flaw, with 47mm in diameter, it can be cumbersome for long days. Its weight remains limited thanks to the titanium, and it slips easily under a shirt with its construction that refines its silhouette, which compensates for its gargantuan dimensions. I wear it with different types of bracelets, and it happily adapts to the exercise. The date at 9 o'clock is original, and the crown located on the left side avoids unpleasant contact with the wrist. This submersible Panerai is a much more comfortable watch than it seems. I always enjoy having such a different object to tell me the time, with an assumed and playful aesthetic.

An imaginary submersible

My Fifty Fathoms represents the pinnacle of modern diver's watches. While the Rolex Submariner remains for many the gold standard for luxury diver watches, I am forced to admit that it is the Fifty Fathoms that sits on the throne of this category.
What strikes me every time I look at it is the attention paid to detail on this watch, whether it is the elegant and comfortable case or the radiant and immaculate dial. The piece shines without vanity, and it is a pleasure to contemplate the solid gold indices or the details of the very unique hands. The history of the Fifty Fathoms also makes it the pioneer of diver's watches with this design that is now so recognizable and repeated by so many competitors. When worn every day, it gives off this feeling of robustness and natural confidence that only true watchmaking successes can display with serenity. Never out of place, always comfortable in sporty or dressy situations, a special aura emanates from this watch, and I am won over by the romanticism of its domed sapphire bezel. I also cite the impressive 5-day power reserve and the antimagnetism of the case as arguments for making it an efficient and robust watch.
Definitely a watch that will remain in the legend of watchmaking, in a version that is technically superior to what the majority of other brands fail to replicate.

A legendary diver

Here is a beast like no other, and yet so impressive in its capabilities and design that I am surprised not to see more of it on the wrists of enthusiasts!
This Breitling was a revelation for me during a surprise test in store. While I expected to be swept away by the size of the almost burlesque case, a few seconds later I found myself amazed by the simplicity and efficiency of its case, the depth of its dial and the technique of its bezel. One of those watches that you absolutely have to try, but which totally convinced me for sports use. However, after several months, I found myself wearing it every day with pleasure and without any problems. A vibrant watch with changing colors, and absolutely impeccable technology. An anti-magnetic case (faraday cage around the movement), a very practical bezel locking system for mountain biking or swimming (I tended to accidentally turn the bezel during physical activities, with sweat/mud), and adequate materials (matte ceramic for the bezel, titanium for the case), make this watch capable of surviving any ordeal! I am absolutely crazy about my Breitling, and in this version with a green dial limited to the brand's boutiques, I really feel like I own a rare and little-known piece. This watch also won the GPHG 2020 competition in the diver's category, which adds another line to an already full CV. I was not necessarily convinced by Breitling divers, being more of a fan of the brand's aviation watches, and I find myself almost surprised to praise the merits of this superb piece. The only regret is that Breitling could have equipped this watch with a movement with a greater power reserve, and would have made a clean sweep. In the meantime, I'm going to do a little trail, with my Superocean 48 on my wrist of course!

A diver with a big heart

It's hard to describe this unusual and original watch in a few lines. My Ulysse Nardin Freak X was a heart-throb purchase, motivated mainly by my love of watchmaking mechanics. I have always admired the different Freak models, and yet I had missed the release of the Freak X. It was when I was about to buy a Ulysse Nardin Marine tourbillon that I discovered it, and my heart did not hesitate.
Once received, we are immediately captivated by the hypnotic movement of the flying carousel, which captivates me day after day without tiring me. The proportions of the case are generous but never uncomfortable, and the watch is so light that each day spent with my Freak X is a delight.
The work done by Ulysse Nardin on the design of the movement and the choice of materials has paid off. We follow with delight the movement of the balance bridge that serves as a minute hand, and we have the feeling of interacting with the mechanism as soon as we adjust the time. The passage of time becomes a spectacle for my existence, and the futuristic design of the dial makes me feel like I'm watching a scientific experiment unfold before my eyes whenever I want. Ulysse Nardin offers me the opportunity to escape for a few moments whenever I want, and for this simple reason this watch makes me smile when I discover it in the morning. My Freak X is a little slice of dream on the wrist, and that's all I ask of modern watchmaking.

Here is a little-known watch, and for good reason, only 10 pieces were made in this configuration! My Chronoswiss Sirius Artist in solid gold and two-tone blue and white configuration is the result of several years of research, before buying it to celebrate a personal family event. This watch takes up the codes of baroque romanticism on which Chronoswiss relied in the late 20th century, and I am completely under its spell! Of course its singular aesthetic will not please everyone, but it is precisely for this reason that it speaks to me. An uninhibited beauty in its expression of romanticism (almost rococo of the 18th century), we find on the dial grand feu enamel in two colors, to honor ancestral decoration traditions. The guilloché on the solid silver dial is done beforehand on a manual machine over a hundred years old, and adds a masterful extra soul to this memorable piece. I find that the shape of the case fits my wrist perfectly, and the attention to detail is evident on every element of the watch. One astonishing detail always strikes me on the dial of this piece, it is the Breguet wire between the two enamel colors, so difficult and risky to execute, and which reflects the light with always mysterious angles.
On these special artistic editions, Maïk Panziera has also worked on the partially skeletonized movement parts to add a guilloche that recalls the work on the dial. A delight!
Chronoswiss offers models that are not made for all tastes, but represent for me a unique watchmaking experience. I am fulfilled by my watch that is so different and that speaks to my own sensibilities. After all, you buy a dream piece for yourself, and the emotion it gives me is the only thing that matters to me.
Note that the miniatures on the dial by André Martinez, and the movement decorations by Kari Voutilainen and Marion Müller are not common on this model and were made later with Chronoswiss to make it a unique piece.

A romantic and unique piece

Here is a very special Grand Seiko, which shows the other face of the famous manufacturer. A watch reserved for the rare Japanese "Master Shop".

Here the elegance that characterizes the brand's consumer models is replaced by another DNA, that of performance and 21st century technology. We start with the materials used, with a titanium and blue ceramic case, just like the two-tone bracelet, for a unique rendering, a featherweight, and a solidity without equal in modern watchmaking.
Then we lay our eyes on the dial, and there, new surprise. Large Arabic numerals in a very geometric font, a embossed pattern full of relief, large indices with a lot of luminescence. We are definitely on a sporty model without compromise.
Then we notice the dauphine hands, very thin and slender, with the usual charm of Grand Seiko and an immaculate polish, and we breathe a little more tranquility.
The 44mm diameter GMT bezel seems to belong directly to the rest of the case and fits superbly into this very light and readable sports watch. The crown benefits from a very special treatment with a recess in a particularly ergonomic titanium support that moves it away from the wrist for increased comfort and protection.
The whole thing is enhanced by a 5Hz high-frequency movement whose components have been manufactured using proprietary MEMS technology guaranteeing tiny tolerances. This is what Grand Seiko can offer at its best, it is simply incomparable to the rest of modern watchmaking productions.

I add that the watch goes very well with different types of bracelets, it has very rarely left my wrist since its acquisition.

What emotions for this SLGH003! I was first struck by the exceptional dial of this watch, with such lively and contrasting colors, then by the always exemplary finishes as only Grand Seiko knows how to do them. A clinical execution of the alternations of polishing between the elements of the dial, which then continues on the facets of this new "evolution 9" case.
With this anniversary watch limited to 1000 pieces, Grand Seiko introduces its new movement with free balance-spring, a double impulse escapement, and a complete balance bridge to give this piece improved robustness and precision.
There is an extra soul that emerges from the watch, transforming a gloomy morning into a little moment of happiness. The whole case, bracelet, movement and dial form a congruent whole that delights me with every glance.

The revival of Grand Seiko

This snowflake is a watch full of qualities that allows to bring an exemplary level of finishing at a more reasonable price than some big Swiss brands. Everything is well thought out and perfectly executed. The polishing of all the elements of the dial is fantastic, which makes it a piece that sparkles under the light whatever the angle from which you look at it. The case is extremely pleasant on the wrist, with a titanium color used that is surprisingly close to steel. The water resistance of 10 bar coupled with the ease of changing the bracelet make it an excellent watch to adapt to all situations, and a direct competitor to the blockbusters of Swiss brands, with this very singular oriental charm.

The Grand Seiko classic

My Navitimer 43 is my little wrist computer, wrapped in a ceremonial suit. I love its features and design, even if I use it more often to calculate a tip than to estimate my fuel level!
Breitling has managed to make a very cluttered dial and yet make it very readable. The contrast of the panda sub-dials and the touches of color make it a small marvel of clarity and a unique experience on the wrist. I love the beautifully executed indices and hands.
A small detail that matters, I chose an older model with the gold winged Breitling logo, which enhances the dial and adds a touch of color to the center, which elevates the watch in my view.
On the wrist, Breitling gives us a lesson in ergonomics with an incredibly comfortable strap, but this case also pairs very well with leather. The look on the strap is iconic though and the comfort makes it an ideal choice for everyday wear.

Although I didn't dream of a Speed at the time of purchase, this choice was obvious when I tried it on. It's hard to express my feelings in words, you have to try it to understand. My Speedmaster moonwatch (2014 version with sapphire crystal) is a successful example of watch design. The construction of the case makes it very comfortable on the wrist despite its large dimensions on paper. The readability of the dial with its strong contrast of white indices on a matte black background makes it an excellent everyday companion. I have no problem reading the time in all circumstances. The sapphire version gives it a more "technical", more clinical look than the warmer version with hesalite crystal. It's perfect for everyday use without worrying about scratches. Sold on a steel bracelet, it goes perfectly with a wide range of leather or textile bracelets, which ultimately makes it very suitable in all situations. I am never disappointed to have chosen it in the morning for my work day or an adventure off the beaten track. The myth of lunar exploration obviously adds to my imagination to make me dream when I contemplate it during the day. The sapphire crystal on the back of my version allows to contemplate a movement that has noble origins and which by its construction allows a very visual explanation of the chronograph complication, a complication that is ultimately difficult to execute correctly and which has fascinated generations of watchmaking enthusiasts for more than half a century now. In short, a timeless, reliable and pure watch. We are not far from the ideal watch!

A clinical Moonwatch

The reference 372 needs no introduction, it is for many the very image of the Panerai brand. Simplicity pushed to its paroxysm, with a radical approach to the use of dial space, and such a warm contrast between the indices, the hands and the space between the two. For me this watch has absolutely no reason to work, and yet it has a phenomenal appeal, it is a lesson in design as much as an anachronistic pleasure for the eyes. Every time I put it on my wrist, I am truly amazed by this pure uninhibited beauty, and a smile appears on my face. A watch with a strong character, and which is ultimately easy to wear if you ignore its dimensions on paper.

The quintessence of Panerai design

This first generation of seamaster with ceramic bezel is a pleasure to wear every day. More versatile and contained in its proportions than the new version, it adapts to all types of environments. It is light and thin, and wears wonderfully on a leather or rubber strap. I am always surprised by its quality of construction and its reliable movement has never failed me.
It is a watch that I wear in all circumstances, for the office, travel or sport, and which will never leave my collection.

A daily that is always suitable

This Longines has a very special place in my collection. After having the "heritage" version from 2014, I couldn't help but think of the original version from 1954. So I sold the first one while waiting to find a good example of a vintage Conquest. Finally, in 2022, I found exactly what I was looking for with this watch in superb condition, with the 19.AS movement, which represents for me the embodiment of Longines' know-how and attention to detail of the case, dial and movement, without compromise. So here we have a watch resistant to water, magnetism, shocks, designed to meet the challenges of exploring the modern world that the second half of the 20th century was destined for. A robust and sophisticated watch, with a degree of finishing equal to the finest watchmaking productions of the time. Yes, the main rubies of the movement are set in gold chatons, the indices are solid gold, and the back of the case features a deep blue enamel motif (the steel and gold-plated versions have a green enamel medallion). A watch that evokes all the attributes of modern watchmaking and Swiss watchmaking tradition simultaneously. For me it is an extraordinary watch, a distillation of history that transports me into its universe and makes the flame of passion burn within me.

A vintage solid gold explorer

This version of the Ingénieur pays homage to motorsport, and brings a breath of fresh air to a less famous range of the IWC collection.

What strikes me with this Ingénieur is truly the quality of the piece and the finishes. The construction of the case is thoughtful and interesting, the treatments of the steel are subtle and varied, and the details of the dial are precise and immaculate. The polishing of the corners of the case, the push buttons and the bezel gives this piece a luxurious appearance while remaining utilitarian.

This philosophy is also found on the movement, which is not derived from a Valjoux as is often the case with IWC, but entirely manufactured. The chronograph has a column wheel coupled to a vertical clutch, all enhanced with a flyback function.

It is a sophisticated and efficient watch, which I easily take with me to work as well as on hiking trips. It is very readable because it is full of contrast, and reflects the light superbly. The size of the beast is not annoying due to a thin profile for an automatic chronograph with vertical clutch (14mm), on the other hand its weight is substantial. But the IWC bracelets are very robust and keep it in place on the wrist once adjusted correctly. A truly special watch that gives a concentrate of technology and refinement in a magnificent package.

A sophisticated and technical IWC

My Linde Werdelin Oktopus Carbon Green is simply exceptional! This watch was an instant favorite once on the wrist. I had quite a few reservations when looking at pictures, which flew away as soon as I had the watch in my hands. The watch has a very strong visual identity, but it ultimately remains wise on the wrist with a restricted size lug to lug, and an incredible lightness due to the carbon, ceramic and titanium construction of the case. And this is where we begin to discover the potential of the piece, in the engineering choices that resulted in the final product. The carbon layers that make up the main part of the case remain visible on the edge of the watch, the ceramic bezel protects the dial and the treated titanium screws and case back add a touch of color that contrasts with the sobriety of the black. The dial is not left out. We discover a skeletonized big date complication, on a semi-open dial background with large numbers 3, 6, 9 that are extremely readable. All sprinkled with gray and green luminova, we have a unique and particularly worked piece. On a daily basis, it is a pleasure to wear it on a solid and comfortable rubber, which integrates into the case and fits the shape of the wrist. The strap change system is also very simple. It is objectively an exceptional watch in terms of technical specifications (materials, movement, case). A watchmaking UFO that is for me a must-have in my collection.

It is a sparkling and extremely readable watch, which is also very ergonomic in every way. The dial remains readable despite the large amount of information available, the thickness of the case remains contained, and the very short lugs make it a pleasant and easy to wear piece on a daily basis.
The legendary El Primero movement is here capable of performing a return in flight, which adds complexity to the mechanism and makes the watch all the more interesting. The colors of the dial and the bezel energize the design, and accentuate the playful side of the piece. The polished chamfers and the finishes of the case still make it a very worked watch that exudes quality.
I am particularly fond of the luminous indices of the most beautiful effect, which are raised and seem to come out of the dial.

At first nothing predestined me to set my sights on this watch. Until the day I had it on my wrist. A real comfort and pleasure to wear every day. Its white background is captivating with these waves. This seamaster has a symbolizes a stage in life. It is a great moment of emotion each time I prepare it or it returns to its case.

An Omega Seamaster 300 for the 30th anniversary!

As soon as it came out, this special edition had really caught my eye with its unique appearance, far from the somewhat flashy appearance of the standard 300M. On the other hand, the disproportionate additional cost had really cooled me down and put me off the model... until I tried it. And there, thanks to the magic of titanium in particular, it was the one! The royal comfort and the multitude of small details make the difference and bring a real renewal to the range. In use, it is my main watch, I like its unique personality, all discretion, almost stealthy, perfectly in line with the job of spy! On this subject, the connection with 007 is nice but is fortunately secondary and is forgotten, we are not dealing with a marketing goodie but a well-thought-out and accomplished product. The only downside I find with the piece is its readability which can be at fault depending on the conditions. The skeleton hands sometimes get lost in the dial, the domed glass lacks anti-reflective coating and the nighttime luminosity is initially very pretty but lacks sparkle and, above all, duration.

New blood

It is customary to think that Seamaster 300 M owners are only backward teenagers who are fans of James Bond. The truth is always a little present in the clichés but in limited proportions. The Seamaster 300 M is in reality the only watch icon after the quartz crisis! I challenge anyone to name another recent iconic model that does not take up the codes of a model designed in the 50s or 70s. Obviously asymmetrical because of this helium valve, it is already precious because of its uselessness and its impracticality. This is why I chose this Seamaster: an icon of my time and even if I was not born when it was launched, it is writing its history in the watchmaking world at the same time as I am in the world of men.
