For the record, I'm talking to you today about this legendary watch that I'm lucky enough to own.

For my 18th birthday, my parents asked me what I wanted, my answer was simple, I wanted something that I could keep all my life. So my parents gave me a gold chain.

However, I very quickly stopped wearing chains, jewelry, etc.

So this chain stayed in its box for a good ten years and I thought it would be wise to get rid of it and replace it with an object that I could wear and remember this moment.

Being a fan of watches, I started reading a lot of history on different legendary models.

The Speedmaster had obviously caught my eye for a long time, but I've never been fond of buying new, I've always liked finding gems by searching for days and days.

So I started looking for a model related to my date of birth, 1988, so a 35.90.50.00 or an Apollo anniversary from 1989. However, I came across its big sister so I decided to acquire it.

Now, I am lucky to have the gift of my 18th birthday on my wrist while being able to savor my passion for watches at the same time.

A watch is always a trace in time and this one will mark an era in my life.

The Holy Grail, the legendary Speedmaster

For the record, I present to you today this unique vintage watch.⁣⁣⁣⁣
My grandfather's EBEL with mechanical winding, it is a watch in his image, unique and complex.⁣⁣⁣⁣
The white gold case, the mechanism also and a slightly smoked convex sapphire glass. The simple black dial with a hand for the hour, the minutes, but not for the seconds. The bracelet having lived as much as him has been replaced by a very simple black leather strap that matches the complexity of the shape of the case.⁣⁣⁣⁣
My grandfather arrived in Belgium at the end of the 50s, he was an elegant man, always in a suit that people called Monsieur. He never went down the mine and very quickly joined Brussels where he started to undertake, he ran the café des artistes, rue des pierres opposite the Ancienne Belgique and then opened Greek restaurants, Zorba, l'Europe, le Parnasse on the main square. All this without knowing how to read or write. My grandfather had a big heart, he knew how to give in order to receive. A striking example, 5 years ago, one evening when I was hungry, we went, some friends and I to an old Greek restaurant in Waregem, the only one still open at 11:30 p.m. This gentleman asked me who I was and I explained to him. When I told him about my grandfather, the gentleman sat on his chair and was moved, he confessed to me that when he arrived in Belgium in 1970, my grandfather had housed him for free for 1 month and had given him a little money so that he could get started, what a coincidence. He was generous and left me this watch, a watch that he himself received as a gift from a Cypriot shipowner.⁣⁣⁣⁣
This watch is a little bit of a trace of his passage and of what he left me, with this watch, he is still a little bit with me and I always wear it on special occasions. The watch is one of the only jewels of the man, but more than an object, it represents emotion & memory.⁣⁣⁣⁣

My first inheritance, my Omega Genève automatic with its silver dial with multiple reflections. It's 2014 and I have the opportunity to buy a Rolex Daytona in a store, I don't have the money but I start talking about watches and really get interested in them! My father brings me this Omega Genève that he has never worn or almost never. 

- "Here, you will wear it, I don't wear it and I had kept it for you". 

I put it on my wrist, tell myself that it is maybe small, strangely my colleague notices it on my wrist the next morning, nice old lady he tells me. I like the fact of wearing a classic and something other than what is fashionable, this watch will not leave me for 4 years. It is versatile, suit, wedding, for a drink, passe-partout, bohemian, in town or on vacation in Mykonos, it goes with everything and that's what I like about it. Okay, it doesn't go in the water but since I swim like a fool...
It's the beginning of everything and despite a financial offer that I can't refuse, I couldn't part with it. Vintage is the value that we want to give to the object.


My first heritage, the one that fueled my Vintage Passion

The Omega Constellation, a vintage watch that I love so much because it combines fine line, elegance and discretion. 
The particularity of the constellation is the large number of bracelets and shapes that have been given to it. One of these is this octagonal shape that I cannot categorize. My fiancée, an interior designer, saw it on one of my auction searches and convinced me of its unique design. I decided to restore it and I think it will remain in my collection for a while. This one is a 1982 version, sold in Ghent, Day & Date with a beautiful deep gray dial.

I always wanted a speed. Vintage and from my birth year. Here I have one! And honestly, it's great. What a pleasure to wear, I can't see anything else. On the other hand, is it the holy grail that will make me stop buying watches? No, no, no! A piece from my birth year, bought from a watchmaker I know well. A unique sentimental value that surpasses this idea of owning a piece of a great human conquest. A piece that will remain in my collection and which, failing to go to the moon, will, I hope, cross the decades in my company!

Magnificent watch purchased for the birth of my son, making me dream for a long time, one of the last 1861 models available near me before the transition to the 3861. Purchased on an Omega alligator leather strap, then mounted on the steel bracelet of the 3861, and here presented on a Tuscany leather strap.

A symbolic speedmaster

Today, I don't have years of hindsight to share a long experience with this Omega. On the other hand, the beginning of the story is interesting: before putting it on my wrist, it didn't appeal to me that much. The Internet is full of photos and videos of the Speedmaster. Everyone talks about it, some even claim that every collector or watch enthusiast should have it in their collection... Until the summer of 2022, I had only seen it in photos. I liked it, but nothing more. In any case, not enough to justify spending such an amount to acquire it, new or used. And then, one day at a barbecue, a guest lent it to me (the very latest model). And it was when I put it on my wrist that the magic really happened. I fell completely under its spell. Great fit, classic look, present by its aura but overdoing it, great quality of bracelet with the reduced size links (I didn't like the look of the old bracelets). In a short time, the Omega Speedmaster has won my heart, it has established itself as a must-have in my collection. If I had to keep only one, it would be a diver because it is more versatile for all activities (the Speedmaster is only waterproof to 30m). But if I had to keep only 2, it would be part of the selection. I chose it with hesalite glass and solid caseback, I preferred its visual rendering with hesalite rather than sapphire. It is undoubtedly proof that not all the most beautiful love stories necessarily start with love at first sight!

Essential and legendary, a piece of history on the wrist

My speed is my first "high-end" watch. Given to me 4 years ago, I dreamed of it as the ultimate model, the first one I would buy when I could, the only one I would have if I had to have only one. In line with my expectations, it never ceases to satisfy me, to call me when I wear another one. Be careful though: having it does not prevent you from wanting others ;-)

THE watch

Nothing original at first glance, to talk about Speed ... but this watch has bite, character perfectly embodying the pioneering and adventurous spirit (black dial and hesalite glass). We do not feel the 42mm on the wrist, so much the watch hugs the wrist. 
The famous caliber 1861 equipped the beauty. The steel bracelet gives a totally lunar look to this watch. unfortunately with the heat my wrist tends to swell so I got into the habit of dressing it with a nato from Omega which gives a little less pep to the watch, but each time I put its steel bracelet back on, the bromance starts again ... On the other hand, the more the years go by, the more the tritium dials catch my eye, these watches have an aesthetic power without any possible measure with the reference that I own. Maybe I will do a lunar jump for an 861 in the future ;)
