The Breitling Superocean is an iconic collection of luxury dive watches, first introduced in 1957. Initially designed for professional divers, the Superocean has evolved over the decades to become an essential reference among diving watches, combining technical performance, robustness and elegant design.

History and Evolution

Launched in 1957, the first Superocean offered water resistance up to 200 meters (20 ATM), a remarkable feat for the time. This watch aimed to meet the needs of professional divers and water sports enthusiasts. Over the years, Breitling has continually improved the collection, increasing the water resistance of some models to 2,000 meters (200 ATM) and incorporating technological innovations to enhance reliability and precision.

Design and Technical Characteristics

The Superocean stands out for its sporty and functional design. Housings, available in stainless steel, bronze or two-tone combinations, are designed to withstand the most demanding environments. Sizes typically range from 36mm to 46mm, providing a range to suit different wrists and preferences.

The dials feature bright colors such as blue, yellow, turquoise and orange, bringing a dynamic and modern touch. The large indexes and hands, often coated with Super-LumiNova, ensure optimal readability even in low light conditions. The scratch-resistant, unidirectional ceramic bezel allows for accurate dive time measurement.

Among notable models, the Superocean Automatic 42mm features a stainless steel case with a deep blue dial and matching bezel. This model offers water resistance up to 500 meters and is equipped with the Breitling caliber 17, an automatic movement chronometer certified by the COSC, guaranteeing exceptional precision. The blue rubber strap with folding clasp ensures optimal comfort and increased safety during water activities.

Another standout model is the Superocean Automatic 44mm with a vibrant turquoise dial and contrasting black bezel. This model maintains a water resistance of 300 meters (30 ATM) and is also powered by the Breitling caliber 17. The bold color combination and robust design make it a popular piece among sports watch enthusiasts.

Features and Performance

Watches in the Superocean collection are designed to provide optimal performance underwater. Waterproofing varies depending on the model, reaching up to 500 meters (50 ATM) for some versions. Screw-down crowns and helium release valves on some models provide added protection during deep dives.

The automatic movements used, mainly the Breitling caliber 17 based on the ETA 2824-2, offer a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. Each movement is chronometer certified by the COSC, ensuring precision and reliability in accordance with the most demanding standards of Swiss watchmaking.

Comfort and Versatility

Despite their robustness, Superocean watches are designed for comfortable daily wear. The cases, although solid, have a moderate thickness, making them easier to fit under a cuff. The bracelets, available in stainless steel, rubber or leather, are equipped with folding or pin buckles, providing security and a personalized fit.

The versatility of the Superocean makes it a watch suitable for both sporting activities and more formal occasions. Its elegant design and careful finishes allow it to be worn in all circumstances, reflecting the know-how and distinctive aesthetic of Breitling.

Conclusion

The Breitling Superocean embodies Swiss watchmaking excellence in the field of diving watches. Combining rich history, technical innovations and refined design, it meets the expectations of professional divers and demanding watch enthusiasts. With a variety of models and configurations, the Superocean continues to establish itself as an essential reference for those seeking performance, reliability and elegance.

A diver with a big heart

4.1

Here is a beast like no other, and yet so impressive in its capabilities and design that I am surprised not to see more of it on the wrists of enthusiasts! This Breitling was a revelation for me during a surprise test in store. While I expected to be swept away by the size of the almost burlesque case, a few seconds later I found myself amazed by the simplicity and efficiency of its case, the depth of its dial and the technique of its bezel. One of those watches that you absolutely have to try, but which totally convinced me for sports use. However, after several months, I found myself wearing it every day with pleasure and without any problems. A vibrant watch with changing colors, and absolutely impeccable technology. An anti-magnetic case (faraday cage around the movement), a very practical bezel locking system for mountain biking or swimming (I tended to accidentally turn the bezel during physical activities, with sweat/mud), and adequate materials (matte ceramic for the bezel, titanium for the case), make this watch capable of surviving any ordeal! I am absolutely crazy about my Breitling, and in this version with a green dial limited to the brand's boutiques, I really feel like I own a rare and little-known piece. This watch also won the GPHG 2020 competition in the diver's category, which adds another line to an already full CV. I was not necessarily convinced by Breitling divers, being more of a fan of the brand's aviation watches, and I find myself almost surprised to praise the merits of this superb piece. The only regret is that Breitling could have equipped this watch with a movement with a greater power reserve, and would have made a clean sweep. In the meantime, I'm going to do a little trail, with my Superocean 48 on my wrist of course!
